Dr. Jonathan Mathews (Career and Legacy)
Dr. Jonathan Mathews worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital, first as a neurology resident and, by summer 2021, as a neurology fellow specializing in epileptology. His care of Edward Pennington spanned Edward’s broken-arm hospitalization, later neurological consultation, and summer 2021 intracranial-pressure crisis.
Residency and Patient Care
Jonathan met Edward during treatment for a broken arm sustained in a fall on ice, about three years before the 2021 shunt surgery. As a neurology resident, he reviewed Edward’s intake and accommodation notes, spoke directly to him, explained procedures before they occurred, and asked permission before involving Eleanor Pennington in his answers. He documented the communication and sensory accommodations that helped Edward receive care. Edward requested Jonathan at follow-up visits and later occasionally emailed him medical articles; Jonathan replied.
Epileptology Fellowship
By 2021, Jonathan was a neurology fellow in epileptology. Dr. Hall remained Edward’s regular neurologist. When Eleanor could not obtain a timely appointment after a severe seizure, Jonathan took her call, recommended a repeat MRI with epilepsy protocol and a 72-hour ambulatory EEG, and urged her to send Hall’s office her video of the event. He offered to try to arrange a Hopkins consultation if the appointment could not be moved forward.
Edward Pennington’s Summer 2021 Surgery
Jonathan joined Julia Weston and the neurosurgical team in considering Edward’s seizure history, sensory needs, and unusual sedation responses during the hospital evaluation. He was present for the lumbar puncture and joined the later discussion of shunt placement after medical treatment failed to relieve Edward’s symptoms. During the operation, he monitored Edward’s EEG, announced the start of propofol, and reported a brief intracranial-pressure spike with cortical irritation. He remained involved as Edward struggled to emerge from anesthesia.
Julia ordered Edward’s admission, MRI, and intracranial-pressure evaluation. Jonathan’s earlier phone advice, procedural planning, intraoperative EEG monitoring, and recovery-room care complemented Julia’s role rather than replacing it.
