Sam Rivera's Bedroom (Jackson Heights)

Sam Rivera’s bedroom was Samuel “Sam” Rivera’s room in the Rivera family’s Jackson Heights apartment from childhood through high school. He used it for sleep, schoolwork, and the private writing practice he began during Charlie Rivera’s 2023 hospitalization.

Overview

The bedroom was one of three bedrooms in the family’s pre-war apartment. During Sam’s years at Stuyvesant High School, it served as his principal study space outside school and as a place where he wrote about experiences he initially struggled to discuss aloud.

Location Within the Apartment

The room was part of a second-floor walk-up apartment with hardwood floors, high ceilings, painted-over molding, solid doors, radiator heat, and no central air. The apartment had no elevator.

Environmental Conditions

The bedroom shared the apartment’s broader environment: the sound of the 7 train, street traffic, neighbors, music through the walls, activity in the kitchen, radiator heat during winter, and summer humidity. Charlie’s practice, household repairs, television, cooking, and the movement of four people through the apartment carried between rooms.

Use and Occupancy

During Sam’s high school years, the room functioned as a study space and decompression space for a student commuting from Queens to Stuyvesant High School in Lower Manhattan. Sam’s daily life during those years included a demanding academic schedule, work on ‘’The Spectator’‘, pickup basketball with Jalen, Joshua “Josh,” and Leo, and the private writing that became his way of processing Charlie’s hospitalization and the healthy sibling experience.

Sam continued using the bedroom through his 2027 graduation from Stuyvesant and departure for Harvard University.
