Fresno, California
Fresno, California was a city in Fresno County in the central San Joaquin Valley. Zeek Reyes and Megan Ashley “Ash” Alvarez grew up there, and their son, Julian Reyes, was born and spent his earliest years there.
Overview
The 2010 census counted 494,665 residents within the city of Fresno.
Geography and Climate
Fresno lay on the San Joaquin Valley floor. A 2008 National Weather Service climate study described the surrounding mountain ranges as producing a rain-shadow effect that kept Fresno comparatively dry. About 90 percent of the city’s normal annual precipitation fell from November through April. Summers brought abundant sunshine, low afternoon humidity, and frequent triple-digit heat on the hottest days; the cool season could bring persistent tule fog that sharply reduced visibility.
Housing, Work, and Family Context
Zeek’s father owned an independent car-repair shop in Fresno. The business provided the Reyes household with modest local financial security without making the family wealthy. After Zeek became a father at seventeen, his father expelled him from the family home. Zeek used money he had saved during Ashley’s pregnancy to rent a small studio apartment in Fresno, where he provided most of Julian’s care.
Before the 2002–03 school year, Ashley’s family moved into a home a few blocks from the Reyes home in the Fresno High-Roeding area. Ashley’s father first met Zeek’s father when he brought the Alvarez family’s car to the Reyes repair shop. Zeek recognized Ashley when they began sixth grade together at Fremont Elementary School.
Community Services in 2009
Comprehensive Youth Services of Fresno operated a federally funded Promoting Responsible Fatherhood initiative called the DADS Program during Julian’s infancy. Federal grant records show that the demonstration ran from September 30, 2006, through September 29, 2011, with a $250,000 continuation award issued in September 2009.
A Judicial Council of California report described DADS as a 2007 expansion of Fresno County’s Access to Visitation work for noncustodial parents. The program targeted families with children or youth who had been exposed to abuse, neglect, or domestic violence, or who were at risk for attachment disorders. Its services included therapeutic supervised visitation.
